Lions Wins Postseason Tournament
Eagles 7 - Lions 6
The Eagles were faced with a difficult task, trying to beat the Lions twice in one day. The team could only complete half the job as the Lions won the playoff tournament with a resounding win in the second game.
In the first game, the Eagles won 7-6 after coming from behind to score two runs in the seventh inning to force a second game. The Eagles were led by Del Kates with three hits and five other players had two hits including Bob Dorenberg, Dave Frayne, Ron Mangini, Craig Wright and Bob Esterly. The key hits were made by Dave Frayne and Bob Dorenberg to start the seventh inning.
Game 1 was an up and down, very exiting game. The Eagles scored 3 in the second inning and the Lions countered with 3. The Eagles scored 2 in the fifth and the Lions scored 3 to take the lead. In the top of the 7th Dave Frayne and Bob Dorenberg with started off the inning with hits enabling their top of the order with Bob Esterly and Craig Wright to drive in the 2 runs they needed to win the game by a 7-6 score. Lions star Pitcher Tom Delaney pitched a great game, but the defense wasn’t quite up to par. He deserved a better fate. Steve Belenko had 3 hits and 2 hits apiece for Tracy Zimmerman, Bill Howland, Jim Stabene and sub Jack McNulty, who also played stellar defense.. Thank you also to Frank Glauser, who filled in at 3rd Base after Ron Cohen went down with a tendon injury mid way through the game. Frank also contributed a hit and played good defense. Also getting hits were Gary Bennett, Judy Agasar, Larry Landes and Ron Cohen.
Lions 10 - Eagles 2
Game 2 and the final game of the 2022 season started with the home team Eagles scoring a run in the 2nd inning. We countered with 4 in the 3rd and 4 in the 4, 1 run in the 5th and one run in the 7th. The Eagles only could muster up one more run with Tom Delaney pitching another stellar performance backed by excellent defense. Th final score being 10-2. Missing in action were Dale Cassidy, Bob Gaines, Norm Ostroff and the injured Ron Cohen. We were lucky enough to have as subs Jack McNulty and David Ortlip who filled in with top notch defense and two hits apiece during the game. Thank you Jack and Dave. Jim Stabene had 3 hits in this game. Bill Howland and Larry Landes had 2 hits . One hit apiece for Steve Belenko , Tom Delaney and Gary Bennett who also sustained rallies with 2 walks. Great job Gary. Tracy Zimmerman also had 2 walks and got on base on an error, so great job Tracy. The Lions had a great year starting out the year with 11 straight wins. Winning all three extra inning games. Finishing in first place with an 18 and 4 record with 10 of our wins by 3 runs or less. Also , winning our first 3 playoffs and then splitting the final day with the very talented Eagles team. Thank you to all our players who gave 100 per cent effort , all the time. You have a lot to be proud of.
The second game started with the Eagles leading 1-0 after two innings but the Lions roared back with nine runs over the next three innings and the Eagles fell apart both defensively and offensively. The Lions won emphatically 10-2.
Many thanks goes out to Tom Boyle who pitched very well in both games for the Eagles and also managed to go two for two in the second game. Ron Mangini also managed two hits in the second game as the Eagles closed out their season.
Congratulations to Ron Cohen and the entire team of the Lions for finishing first in the tournament and the regular season
Finally, I am very proud of the Eagles for finishing second in the regular season and second in the tournament. I wish to thank all the Eagles players for their contributions and efforts. As manager, I truly enjoyed my time with our team and wish everyone a healthy and happy off season. Oh, that's no bullshit.
