Blue Jays 13 Wolfpack 9
The seriously outnumbered Blue Jays took on a full Wolfpack and emerged victorious by a score of 13 to 9. The birds started strong with a five run first inning on hits by Jim Klemick, Del Kates, Fred Weiner, Jim O'Brien, a Jeff Blank walk, a hit by Tom Sikora and a 2 out RBI single by Mark "Whitey" Jerden. Two out hits were the key to the blue birds offense as 9 of the jays 13 runs were scored with 2 outs. In the fourth inning the birds struck for 5, once again on 2 out RBI singles by Fred Weiner, Jim O'Brien, Jeff Blank, Tom Sikora and Warren Fuchs. Naturally the pack responded with 4 runs in the fourth inning, 2 runs in the fifth inning and then scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10 to 9. With 2 outs in the top of the seventh the birds struck again on a three run home run by Jim Klemick.
Every member of the bird's offense had at least one hit and every member of the bird's defense contributed to the win. The make do outfield of Jeff Blank, Fred Weiner, Tom Sikora and Warren Fuchs all had outfield putouts and did a good job of preventing any hits from getting in the gaps. Jim Swiderski caught a foul fly while catching and the infield of Del Kates, Jim Klemick (2 outstanding catches), Bob Doernberg and Mark Jerden all made plays when needed.
Leading the offense was Jim Klemick going 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored, 3RBI's and a home run. Jim O'Brien and Mark Jerden both went 4 for 4. Del Kates chipped in with 3 hits while Fred Weiner and Jeff Blank both had two hits.
Congratulations to Scott Comer who missed the game to be in Boston for the birth of his new grandson. In order to properly celebrate the victory Scott is lobbying with his daughter to name the child JimBobFredDelWarrenMarkTomJeff.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of first with a combo of solid hits, a couple of costly Wolfpack errors and a very questionable call by the ump on a fly ball. The Wolfpack pushed 2 runs over the plate but again bad play allowed the Jays to score 5 runs in the top of the fourth. The Pack responded in the bottom of the fourth with 4 runs with Phil D'Angiolini clearing the bases with a clutch triple. The Wolfpack offense scored another 3 runs over the next two innings making the score 10-9 Blue Jays favor. In top of the 7th inning the Pack got two outs and had the BlueJays where they wanted them but a costly infield error opened the door for the Jays leadoff batter to smash a home run leading to a Wolfpack defeat by final score of 13-9.
Flames 8 Starr 7 (9 Innings)
The Flames defeated Starr 8-7 in a tight 9 inning game well played by both teams. The Flames were on fire early as usual. In the top of the first inning, Starr had runners on first and third with no outs after their first two hitters batted. The Flames held them to one run by turning a double play with Gene Harris scooping a hard one hopper, flipping to Tom Cosgrove, who completed the play to Aaron Sacharov at first base. In the bottom of the first inning, the Flames scored 5 runs. Starr scored 5 runs in the top of the fourth inning and the game was tied at 7-7 after 5 innings. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the ninth when the Flames loaded the bases with ghost runner Aaron Sacharov and singles by Lee Jaslow and Derek Foster. Tom Cosgrove singled to right field to end the nailbiter. The Flames were led by Tom Cosgrove's three hits (including a double) and two hits from Derek Foster, Kevin Grevera, Gene Corrado, Frank Glauser, Carl Weigand, and John Salmon. Ken Radon had 2 RBI's (giving Ken 25% of our total for the game!). Gene Harris walked twice - once with the bases loaded - critical in a close game. The defense turned two more double plays after the first inning. Frank Glauser had another game with multiple strong plays at third base. Ken Radon reached up and caught a line drive that would have been 3 feet over Tom Cosgrove's glove! John Salmon fired out from his catcher's crouch to snare a foul pop. Gene Corrado, Derek Foster, and Kevin Grevera all made running catches on well struck liners to the outfield. Norm Derry pitched a great game.
The Flames outlasted Starr with an exciting 10 - 9 win in 9 innings. The Flames jumped out with a 5 run 1st inning. Starr took a 6 - 5 lead in the 4th inning. Both teams battled back & forth with the game going into extra innings. Both teams turned 3 double plays in a battle between 2 good teams. Tom Cosgrove drove in the winning run in the 9th. Frank Glauser played a great third base for the Flames.
The Starr offense was led by Terry Klein and Alan Massey with 3 hits each.
Larry Levin, Ron Fein and Billy Schwartz each had 2 hits.
Hal Katz, Jack Donahue, Terry Abrams, Lee Bullman, and SF Harris Braunstein had 1 hit. Great game, great camaraderie
Devils 25 Classics 10
The Devils brought the heat from hell today with a barrage of hits and runs defeating the Classics by a score of 25-10.
The Devil's defense was not an issue because on the offensive side every member of the Devils hit today. Dave Bushar was 5-5. Kevin Culp 3-5 pitched a great game with his usual strong defensive play. Ken Riess was 4-5, Jerry Barlow was 5-5, Frank Froio was 3-5, "Home Run" Steve Scheele went 3-5 (with no home runs), Bill Russell 5-5 with a tremendous triple to right field. (Oxygen was needed) and Dave Frayne, Our great catcher went 5-5. Kudos to Dave Frayne.
Eagles 25 Panthers 14
The Eagles offense started slow against the Panthers who were playing with only ten players. The Panthers were leading 4-1 going into the third inning. The Eagles turned the offense on and ended up scoring in every inning except the second. They finished up by scoring eleven runs in the seventh inning and managed a total of 24 runs.
The Eagles offense was led by Ed Brandriff who went six for six at the plate, including a triple.
Four players had four hits each including Ted Henrizzy, Pascal Houcke, Andy Cohen (two doubles), and Bob Esterly (one double). There were also three players with three hits each including Bill Howland (two doubles), Barry Winsor and Greg Peters (one triple). Doug Rutter chipped in with two hits. Barry Winsor again pitched and fielded a terrific game. Bill Howland made a nice catch of a line drive at third. He also made a nice relay throw to Doug Rutter to record an out at home plate. Judy Agasar made an excellent running catch in right centerfield
.
The Panthers played 6 good innings with 10 players against the Eagles yesterday. Unfortunately it was a 7 inning game. The Panthers lost 25-14 after giving up 11 runs in the top of the 7th.
Not much more can be said. The Panthers were efficient with the bats scoring 14 runs on 14 hits. Ed Occhi went 4-5 with a double and Mike Segal also went 4-5. Howard Wible was 3-5 and Joe Grines contributed a double to round out the offense. Defensively John Mack made a couple of really nice defensive plays in left field including a put-out at 2nd base, turning a base hit into a fielder's choice.
