Starr 19 Devils 11
An unusual game today between these 2 teams. Starr jumped out to a 9 to 0 lead after 4 innings. In the bottom of the 5th the Devils scored 3 runs to cut the lead to 9 to 3. Starr tacked on 2 in the top of the 6th for a 11 to 3 lead. Then an unbelievable turn of events happened when the Devils scored 8 runs to tie the score at 11 to 11. Starr looked dejected and beaten. In the top of the 7th with 2 outs and 2 on, Starr went on a tear and scored 8 unanswered runs for a final of 19 to 11. That is 2 games in a row with a score of 19 to 11, this is 2 games in a row after a bashing and beating of Starr by the Wolfpack. Offensively Larry Levin went 5 for 5, hitting for the cycle, scoring 5 runs and 3 RBI's. Jack Donohue chipped in with 4 hits and 6 RBI's. Also with 4 hits was Ron Fein. Chipping in with 3 hits was Hal Katz. Two hits by Spencer Synderman, Bill Schwartz, Lee Bullman and Alan Massey. One hit for Terry Klein, Terry Abrams, and Jay Passman. It was a long game and the temperature and humidity were brutal. It would have been nice to start with a 1 and 1 count on hot humid days for the 2nd games. There were no losers in this game!
Devils came out flat until the fifth inning scoring 3. But in the bottom of the sixth, Devils made a game out of it, scoring 8 runs to tie the game at 11. Well,
That didn’t last long as Starr got 8 runs in the top of the seventh, and the Devils fell flat. Final 19-11
Leading hitters for the Devils were: Dave Bushar, Kevin Culp, Wayne Haller, who all went 2 for 4. Ken Riess went 3 for 4 and Jerry Barlow, Frank Froio, and Bill Russell went 3 for 4.
Wolfpack 13 Wildcats 6
The Wolfpack scored first with a single run in the first inning with key hits by Phil D'Angiolini, Bob Gaines and Dick Tosti but the Wildcats roared back in the bottom of the first with 3 runs and added another three over the next two innings. The Pack bats slept late today and finally woke up in the third inning with a 5 spot and then added another 2 runs in the fifth inning. Jack Galloway started on the mound and after pitching almost a complete game during batting practice pitched another gutsy performance until the fourth inning. The Wolfpack infield combo of Tosti, Bragg and Stabene shut down the Wildcats in innings 4 through 7 with 3 double plays, one big one in the last inning to seal the win. The lights out pitching of Wayne Heaton shut down the Wildcats bats for the last three innings. But the big Wolfpack bats could not be contained as they clawed the Wildcats with 7 additional runs in the last three innings. Dick Tosti kept a red hot bat with 3 hits(big double), Tracey Zimmerman had 3 hits as did Bob Gaines and Phil D'Angiolini. Phil slashed a long drive to left with two men on for a triple (should have been a home run) in the seventh inning. Contributing to the hot hitting Pack was Ron Mangini with 2 hits, Keith Klasic with 2, Jack Galloway with 2, Curtis Bragg with 2 (even with a cut up leg from a great fielding play.)
Howard Borochaner played an excellent infield and had 3 hits along with Jim Stabene with 2. Wayne Heaton slashed 1 hit and "Arnie" Rosenblatt (inside joke) as he took time off from the golf course to play an excellent first base and added a key hit for the Wolfpack. Final score Wolfpack 13 Wildcats 6 .
The Wildcats started Hot with 3 in the First and 2 more in the 2nd and had a 5-1 Lead after 3 Innings then all of a “SUDDEN” the “wERRORcats“ REAPPEARED !!! After 2 Straight Games with SOLID and NEAR FLAWLESS DEFENSE the Wildcats went back to Their Old Ways in a “COMPLETE TEAM MELTDOWN” to Lose to Ron Mangini and His Wolfpack !!! The only Bright Spot was Larry Restivo who led the Wildcats going 2 for 3
And as Larry always says Our next game starts a NEW SEASON !!!
Classics 13 Panthers 11
This was a back and forth game that was tied twice in 4th inning at 3-3 and then again in the 5th inning at 8-8. In the 6th the Panthers scored 2 runs to go ahead 10-8 but in the top of the 7th the Classics scored 5 runs to go ahead 13-10. The Panthers came right back to score 1 run but fell short losing 13-11. Great team win by the Classics.
One outstanding play of the game was a ball hit to Fred Eberhardt (RC) who relayed the ball to Andy Markowitz (MF) to Jim Carlin (C) in a close play to get a runner out trying to score.
Outstanding hitting by Tony Baccari and Tom Jakubowski both going 4-4 and Eric Gottlieb and John Breig both going 3-4 in the game.
The Panthers dropped another close game to the Classics by a score of 13-11. In a back and forth game that was tied twice, the Panthers took the lead in the 6th inning 10-8 but couldn't hold on giving up 5 runs to the Classics in the 7th inning. The Panthers could only muster 1 run in the bottom of the 7th. John Rozolis made a couple of outstanding catches at short while the team played decent defense for 5 innings. The game proved costly as John Mack went out with an ankle injury. The Panthers put up 20 hits led by Ed Occhi who went 3-4 with a double. Joe Grines and Howard Wible also went 3-4. Mike Segal went 2-4 with a 3 rbi double. Bill Matlack also had a 2-4 game.
Eagles 14 Blue Jays 9
The Eagles got a good start and led the Blue Jays 10 to 3 after 3 innings. The Eagles then scored 2 runs in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth inning while the blue jays scored 4 in the fourth and 2 in the sixth to close the Eagles lead to 14 to 9. Neither team scored in the seventh and 14 to 9 was the final score. It was the fourth time we played the Blue Jays this year and it was the Eagles first win against the Blue Jays. Thankfully we don't have to play them in the regular season this year as they are a very formable team. The Eagles were led by Ed Brandriff who went 4 for 4 including a double and triple. Bill Howland went 4 for 4 including a double. Judy Agasar had 3 hits. Ted Henritzy, Greg Peters, Dale Cassidy, Rich Diçkson and Doug Rutter all had 2 hits a piece. Ted Henritzy played solid defense in the outfield.
The Blue Jays started slow for the second consecutive game allowing 9 runs in the first 2 innings in both games. In both games they were unable to get back in the game. The jay birds were able to defeat the Eagles in previous efforts by playing strong defense and winning in close games. That didn't happen Tuesday as the ball never bounced in favor of the smaller blue birds. Scott Comer and Jim O'Brien were both 3 for 3 while Jim Klemick, Fred Weiner (2 RBI's) and Jack McNulty (double, triple) all contributed to the offense with 2 hits each.
