Thursday's Results

Eagles 14 Panthers 3

The Eagles  played the Panthers who had some injured players and fielded only 10 players. The Eagles were able to score 4 runs in the first inning  and the Panthers scored 1 in the second  inning and the game was pretty close going into the fourth  inning at 4 to 1 but the Eagles scored 10 runs in the next 3 innings to break the game open. The eagles walked away with a 14 to 3 win over the Panthers. The Eagles were led by Dave Detailer (I'm not going to get into details here, but I suspect it was Dave Detwiler) who went 3 for 3 including a double and 2 RBI's. The Eagles also had 8 players with 2 hits including Ed Brandriff, Bill Howland, Ted Henritzy, Mike Kroeger, Barry Winsor, MD Greg Peters, and Rich Diçkson. We also welcomed Mike Kroeger back from his vacation and he hit a 2 run double in his first at bat. Nice start from Mike!

The shorthanded Panthers didn't have their best outing yesterday losing to the Eagles, 14-3.  While the Panthers had several nice defensive plays they were unable to stop the Eagles bats giving up 4 runs in 2 separate innings and 3 runs in 2 others.  Hitting was weak as well.  Howard Wible had a good day with the bat as did Craig Wright.  They went 3-3 and 2-3 respectively.  They accounted for 5 of the 9 total hits posted by the Panthers.  Mike Segal did a good job filling in as pitcher again and John Rozolis made several of his patented outstanding catches at shortstop.

Devils 14 Classics 13

Devils were shut out until the third inning, scoring 5 runs making it 6-5, Classics.
Devils tied it up in the 7th, but the Classics put on 5 in the 5th and 1 in the 7th.  Bottom of the 7th, Devils started at the bottom of the lineup, down 13-8.
Steve Weiss, and Dave Frayne got on and then Kevin Culp got a double to score 3 runs.
With no outs, bases loaded, Gene Reeber hit a double to score all 3 bases runners to win the game, 13-12
Awesome comeback for the Devils, they were never in the lead all game.
Hits for the Devils are Kevin Culp, Dave Simone. Wayne Haller, and Gene Reeber went 2-4.  Ken Riess went 3-4.  Bill Russell, Steve Sheele, Steve Weiss, and Dave Frayne all went 2-3.

This was a Classics melt down for a team lost 14-13

Starr 12 Flames 11 (8 Innings)

This was the sloppiest game of the season for Starr and the game went to an extra inning. In the first inning the Flames scored 3 runs and Starr scored 1 giving the Flames a 3 to 1 lead. Starr scored 4 in the bottom of the 3rd and 2 in the bottom of the 5th for a 7 to 3 lead. Both Starr and the Flames scored 2 in the 6th as Starr still led 9 to 5. In the top of the 7th the Flames tacked on 5 runs  for a 10 to 9 lead going into the bottom of the 7th where Starr scored 1 run to tie and send the game into extra innings. In the 8th the Flames scored 1 to go ahead. In the bottom of the 10th Starr loaded the bases with 2 outs when the Flames pitcher lost it and walked 2 batters scoring 2 runs for a 12 to 11 victory.  Starr ran out of healthy players and asked Harris (Speedy Gonzales) Braunstein to run twice and also ran for himself twice as he had 2 hits. The medical report is he now has to rest for 3 days to get ready for next week. Filling in at shortstop, Ron Fein, threw out a runner at 3rd and at home to stop 2 rallies. Offensively Starr was led by Jack (horse) Donohue going 4 for 4. Larry Levin, Spencer Synderman, and Jay Passman each had 3 hits. Chipping in with 2 hits were Ron Fein, Bill Schwartz, Alan Massey and Lee Bullman (on 1 leg). Also contributing with 1 hit was Terry Klein and Terry Abrams.  Thanks to all my injured teammates for stuffing it out through all of your pulled muscles and bad knees. A true team effort by everybody.

Someone relit the Flames pilot light and their shutout streak ended in an exciting eight inning 12-11 loss to Starr.  The two teams demonstrated their love for the game with their second extra inning tight game of the season against each other.  The Flames were down 9-5 entering the top of the seventh inning and scored 5 runs to take a 10-9 lead.  Starr tied it up in the bottom of the inning.  The Flames pushed the ghost runner across in the top of the eighth inning but Starr scored two in the bottom for the win.  Lee Jaslow starred for the Flames making multiple stellar defensive plays at second base.  Lee also had two hits and scored the game tying run in the top of the seventh.  Kevin Grevera made a great defensive play with the leaping catch in leftfield on a smoked drive.  Derek Foster had four hits including a triple.  Norm Derry, Carl Weigand, Gene Harris, Ron Tuminski, and Tom Cosgrove had two hits each with doubles by Norm and Tom.

Wolfpack 17 Blue Jays 8

The Wolfpack was hungry and munched on the BlueJays 17-8. Each team scored 3 runs in the first inning and nothing in the second inning. After the Pack scored another 3 spot in the third inning, the BlueJays rallied for 5 in the bottom of the inning. Jack Galloway pitched his heart out going in and out of trouble but keeping the Jays at bay. In the top of the fifth the Pack put on their hitting shoes scoring 5 runs, another 4 runs in the sixth and buried the Jays with an additional 2 runs in the top of the seventh. Wayne Heaton closed out the BlueJays from the 5 through 7th innings to lock in the win for Jack. Great defense was shown by the Wolfpack, turning in spectacular double plays by Dick Tosti and Phil Angiolini. Bob Gaines and Keith Klasic both made fabulous running catches in the outfield to stop BlueJay rallies. The Pack offense was led by Keith Klasic with 4 hits, including a clutch triple, Phil Angiolini with 3 hits , Augie Rosenblatt with 3, Bob Gaines with 3, Tracey Zimmerman with 2, Jack Galloway with 2 including a booming double, Butch Bodenheimer with 2 clutch singles, Dick Tosti with a sac fly rbi and a crucial single. Jim Stabene and Ron Mangini also had 1 hit each. The Pack was firing on all cylinders with good pitching, solid defense and great hitting for a big win.

The Blue Jays failed to capitalize on early scoring opportunities and lost control of the game to the Wolfpack.  The pack played a great game hitting the ball hard and often, and making the plays when needed on defense.  The Blue Jays did not.  Jack McNulty had led the birds offense going 2 for 3 with a triple and a double and 3 RBI's.  Jeff Blank and Scott Comer (2 RBI's) chipped in with 2 hits while Jim O'Brien was 2 for 2 with a walk.  Jim Klemick, Del Kates, Fred Weiner and Jim Swiderski all had one hit and a walk.  Tom Sikora walked twice.
