Thursday's Results

Wolfpack 8 Flames 0

Great pitching by Wayne Heaton extinguished the big bats of the Flames for a 8-0 shutout. The Pack played flawless defense protecting 4-0 lead over the first three innings. The Wolfpack offense roared back this game with 3 timely hits from Dick Tosti, Phil Angiolini, Jack Galloway and Howard Borochaner. Also contributing to the scoring was Ron Mangini (now seeing only one ball being pitched) with a sac rbi and 2 hits, Tracey Zimmerman, Keith Klasic, Curtis Bragg, Wayne Heaton, Craig Niederpruem and Augustus Rosenblatt (who shaved for the game) each with 1 hit.
It was a great team effort by every player on the Wolfpack.

The Flames were turned into embers by the Wolfpack in an 8-0 loss.  Derek Foster stepped up to pitch with Norm Derry out with an injury.  Derek also led the offense with three hits including a double.  Ken Radon had three hits and tied the rest of his teammates for the highest (and lowest) percentage of RBI's.  Frank Glauser had two hits and turned a third to first doubleplay.  Other strong defensive plays were made by Gene Corrado in leftfield, Kevin Grevera in left center field, Derek Foster at pitcher, and Ken Radon at first base.

Blue Jays 11 Starr 5

The Blue Jays took advantage of a banged up Starr squad, capitalized on some outfield misplays, and played steady defense to down Starr by a score of 11 to 5.  Starr scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump ahead 5 to 3 but the Blue Jays piled on scoring 4 runs in both the 6th and 7th innings.  Jeff Blank stepped up to the plate in the leadoff position to replace the missing Jim Klemick and went 2 for 4 with a run scored.  Tom Sikora stepped up to the plate whenever he felt like doing so, and chipped in with 3 hits and 3 RBI's.  The bluebird defense made their share of miscues but rebounded well and never let Starr rack up a big inning. Bob Doernberg extended his glove hand and leaped high to catch a line drive to end the game.  I didn't see him actually leave the ground but I had his assurance that he did so.

Leading the bird offense was Tom Sikora with 3 hits.  Fred Weiner was 2 for 4 with an early 2 RBI double to give the birds a 3 to 1 lead.  Del Kates, Bob Dolan and Scott Comer were also 2 for 4. Jack McNulty was 2 for 2 with a walk and a sac fly.  Jim O'Brien and Jim Swiderski were both 2 for 3 with a walk.

Eagles 11 Devils 10

The Eagles and the Devils played another very tight  game  that went back and forth and took 9 innings to declare a winner. The Devils scored 2 in the first and the Eagles scored 5 in the first but the Eagles couldn't stop the Devils from  scoring 2 runs in the second and third innings taking a 6 to5 lead going into the bottom of the third. But the Eagles fought back and scored 3 runs in the third to take a 6 to 5 lead. Neither team scored in the next 2 innings until the Eagles scored  2 more in the sixth inning to take a 10 to 6 lead going into the seventh inning. The Devils came right back and scored 4 runs to tie it up. The Devils then took the lead  scoring 1 run in the top of the eighth  but the Eagles responded by scoring 1 run in the eighth to tie it up again. The Eagles were able to  hold the Devils scoreless in the ninth and the Eagles were
able to get another run in the ninth to come away with a 12 to 11 win. This was a very entertaining and exciting game with the Devils. It certainly ranked as  a very competitive and fun game as  we played all season. Our hats go off to the Devils for one of the best games of the year. The Eagles were led by 4 players with  3 hits a piece including Ed Brandriff who went 3 for 3 with a triple, Bill Howland who went 3 for 4 with a double, Mike Kroger  who had a double and a single and Bob Esterly who went 3 for 3.  The eagles. Also had 3 players who had 2 hits a piece including Ted Henritzy, Andy Cohen, and Judy Agasar. Dale Cassidy played great defense and had a nice catch of a line drive. Dave Detwiler also speared a line drive. Barry Windsor and Devil's pitcher Kevin Culp both pitched very well in a very entertaining game.

Well, the Devils were down the whole game until the 7th inning, when they tied the game up 10-10, with a bases loaded triple from Tom Reither.  In the 8th inning the Devils scored 1 and the Eagles matched them scoring 1 to send the game to the 9th inning. The Devils did not score in the 9th, and lost in the bottom 12-11.

A Well-played game on both sides.  Hits for the Devils were Steve Weiss, Dave Bushar and Kevin Culp all going 3-4.  Dave Bushar went 3-5, while Wayne Haller and Bill Russell went 2-4  The Biggest hit of the day was Tom Reither's triple in the top of the 7th scoring all 3 base runners to tie the game at 10-10.

Panthers 13 Classics 11

The Panthers eked out a win over the Classics 13-11 after scoring 2 runs in the 7th inning to break an 11-11 tie.  The Panthers scored in the first 3 innings to go ahead 6-2,  The Classics scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to go ahead by 1 run.  The Panthers answered with a 5 run 5th inning to go ahead by 4 runs only to have the Classics score 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the game 11 runs apiece.  The Panthers 2 runs in the final inning proved to be the difference.  Joe Grines and John Rozolis both had 4-4 days.  Clete Mahoney went 2-3 with a triple and Ed Occhi and Craig Wright also went 2-3.

The Classics were short handed with 10 players but kept the game close. The lead went back and forth tied in the sixth 11-11 but could not hold the lead losing 13-11.
The hitting came from Eric Gottlieb, Tom Boyle with 3 hits each.
Ken Mealey, Paul Stetskos ( two doubles), Tony Baccari ( 2b & 3b ), Fred Eberhardt and Dave Cutler all had two hits each.
