2024 Tournament Day 2 results

Eagles 11 Wolfpack 10

The Eagles and the wolf pack played another close game that came down to the last batter in a thrilling playoff game.  The Wolfpack struck first by scoring 3 runs in the first inning but the Eagles scored 5 in the first. The Eagles then scored 1 in the third inning to take a 6 to 3 lead going into the fourth inning. Then the Wolfpack responded, scoring 1 in the fourth, 2 more in the 5th, and 3 more to take a 9 to 6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. It was then that the eagles woke up by scoring 5 runs, thanks to Mike Kroger who then hit a grand slam, to give the eagles a 11 to 9 lead going into the seventh inning . The Wolfpack would not give up and with the game on the line with runners on base Bill Howland snagged a very hard hit line drive at third base to end the game. It certainly was  a game saver for the Eagles. The Wolfpack played very hard and it was a very competitive game. The Eagles came away winning 11 to 10.  Bill Howland also went 3 for 3 at the plate and Mike Kroger had  2 hits including a double, a home run, and drove in 5 runs. He also made a diving catch iñ the outfield to end another Wolfpack inning.  Ed Brandriff had 2 hits and a walk while scoring 2 runs. The eagles also had 3 players with 2 hits including Barry Windsor, Dale Cassidy and Bob Esterly. Pascal Houcke made a nice running catch in the outfield and Dave Detwiler had a nice catch at second base, it was another very entertaining game as both teams played hard until the last out.

This tournament game was one of the tightest games of the year. Both teams came out firing with the score tied at 6-6 until the top of the sixth inning when the Pack pushed across 3 runs to make the score 9-6. But the eagles were not done as they put two men on with base on balls, a single and a clutch screamer to right field clearing all bases for a homerun making the score 11-9 after six innings. The Wolfpack rallied for their 10th run and had men on 2nd and 3rd but a smoking liner to third base was caught for a heart breaking ending for the Pack....final score 11-10.
Wolfpack offense was lead again by Keith Klasic with 3 hits, Curtis Bragg, Wayne Heaton, Augie Rosenblatt and Butch Bodenheimer each with 2 hits.

Blue Jays 7 Wildcats 6

The Blue Jays hosted the Wildcats in what ended up being a well played game by both teams.  After a scoreless first inning the cats posted a run in the first inning and the jays responded with two runs.  In the fourth inning the birds scored 2 more runs to increase their lead to 4 to 1.  In the fifth inning the cats scored 2 to cut the lead to 1 run but the jays responded with a run to make the score 5 to 3.  The sixth inning was highlighted by a 3 run Wildcat rally to take a 6 to 5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Del Kates reached first base to start the inning and that was followed by a double by Jack McNulty.  Fred Weiner was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Scott Comer followed with a grounder to short but the throw home was off target and the game was tied at 6.  Bob Dolan then looped a game winning RBI single to left field.

The Blue Jays offense was championed by Jack McNulty who was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI.  Jim O'Brien was 2 for 2 with a double, a home run, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.  Del Kates had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.  Bob Dolan had 2 hits, a run scored and the game winning RBI.  Jeff Blank and Mark "Whitey" Jerden both had 2 hits.  Jim Klemick made an outstanding catch at second base to steal a hit away from Charlie Whittaker and Tom Sikora snagged two hard hit line drives in the top of the 6th inning to prevent the Wildcats from having a really big inning.  Jack McNulty leaped high in the air (just like Bob Doernberg thinks he did last week) to steal a Wildcat hit.  Tom's Wildcats played very well and deserved a better outcome.

In a Low Scoring Game the Bluejays Scored 2 Runs in the Bottom of the 7th to get by the Wildcats by a Score of 7-6 !! Both Teams Played Good Defense the Entire Game to keep the Scoring to a Minimum !!! On Offense the Wildcats were led by Tom Boyce 2 for 3 with 2 Runs Scored George Groves and Bob Silvester both going 2 for 3 with each Player Scoring a Run and Bill Krieger and Gene Rubin both going 2 for 3 !!! The Wildcats Defensive Highlights were 2 Foul Balls Caught by Monroe Weingarten the 1st one was caught and Held onto as Monroe Rolled over Home Plate and Raised His Glove to show that he held onto the Ball, On the 2nd Catch he had to go a few feet out of the Batters Box to make another “NICE CATCH” 👏👏👏
Congratulations to Jim O’Brien and His Blue Jay Teammates on a “WELL PLAYED GAME” 👏👏

Devils 17 Flames 11

The Devils won their first tournament game today defeating the Flames by a score of 17-11.  The Devils started hot scoring 4 runs in the first inning but the Flames responded with 4 to even up the score.  The Devils then score 5 runs in the top of the second and never looked back.  The unholy Defense was awesome agin with no errors all day.  The Offense was headed by Dave Bushar and Tom Reither both with home runs.  Kevin Culp pitched another great game going 4-4. Tom Reither was also 4-4 and Dave Simone went 3-4.  Walks were big today as Dave Frayne was walked 3 times.

The Flames changed the lineup and showed some offensive fire but couldn't contain the potent Devils' offense in a 17 to 11 loss in round one of the tournament.  The Flames and Devils both scored four runs in the first inning.  The Flames didn't score again until the bottom of the sixth inning with seven runs before even recording an out!  But the additional thirteen runs the Devils scored in the second through sixth innings proved too much to overcome.  Derek Foster stepped in to pitch with Norm Derry limited to DH due to injury.  Derek and Norm led the offense with three hits each.  Gene Corrado, Kevin Grevera, and Frank Glauser all had two hits.  Carl Weigand contributed a triple.

Starr 9 Panthers 5

Starr jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead after 3 innings. The Panthers finally put q run up on the to of 4th to cut into Starr's lead. Starr answered with 3 in the bottom of the 5th and 2 on the sixth to close out the score of 9 to 5. Starr did not play up to snuff but pulled a victory out with some timely hitting and help from poor defense. The Panthers hung tight, only having 10 players.  Offensively for Starr  was Larry Levin,Terry Klein, and Ron Fein chipping in with 2 hits. Also Jack Donohue,Spencer Synderman,Lee Bullman,Bill Schwartz,Terry Abrams,Alan Massey,Jay Passman, and Harris Braunstein chipped in with 1 hit. Harris Braunstein also had a base clearing double in the 5th inning giving Starr some breathing room. Great team effort. Thanks to our injured players for contributing today!

A short handed but scrappy Panther team fell to Starr by a score of 9-5.  A 4 run first inning by Starr proved to be the difference in the game.  The Panthers defense held the good hitting Starr team to only 5 runs after the first inning. The Panthers scored 1 run in the 4th inning and 4 runs in the 6th inning.  Three of the four 6th inning runs came off the bat of Mike Aversa who hit a 3 rbi double.  Joe Grines and Steve Belenko led the Panther hitting, each going 2-3 in the game.  Thanks to Paul Stetsko who did a fine job in the outfield subbing for the Panthers.
