Results of Tuesday Tournament Day 2 Games

Classics 6 Eagles 4 (8 Innings)

Good fortunes continued for the Classics in game two of the postseason tournament as they won another nail biter against the always formidable Eagles ball club.  After sailing along with a 3-0 lead through five innings the Classics were tagged for three runs by the soaring Eagles who left the go ahead run at second base to end the sixth frame.

After a scoreless seventh inning, the Classics put up a three spot in the top of the eighth and held the Eagles to a phantom run in the bottom of the inning to secure the 6-4 victory.
Both teams played an excellent brand of playoff softball.

The Classics' offensive production was primarily fueled by the middle of the batting order lead by Curtis Bragg (3 for 3 with 2 runs scored); Jeff Blank (3 for 3); Jack Galloway (2 for 2 with a sac fly RBI and run scored); Howard Borochaner (2-3 with two runs scored). Craig Niederpreum and Charlie Whittaker both chipped in with two hits each.

Defensively, Eric Gottlieb made a web gem of a play by throwing out a runner at second base while landing flat on his back to thwart an Eagles late inning comeback attack.

The Eagles and the Classics game went into extra innings.  The Classics proving they had solid pitching, fielding and timely hitting to come out of top 6-4 after eight innings.

The Eagles could only muster nine hits as each of our catchers had one hit apiece including Dave Cutler who also scored a run.  Joe Travato also had a clutch hit and scored a run.  Gary Bennet also had a hit.  The Eagles managed to score three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game but they could not keep up with the Classics in the eighth inning.

Blue Jays 12 Devils 11  (9 Innings)

Amazing game with both teams hitting and playing well.  The Devils jumped out early with 3 runs in the first but the Jays rebounded to take a 4 to 3 lead with 2 runs in the second and 2 more in the fourth.  The Devils tied it up in the bottom of the fourth but the Jays added two runs in the fifth and 2 more in the top of the seventh to take an 8 to 4 lead.  The Devils were not to be denied tying the game with a 4 run seventh and sending the game to extra innings.  The Jays got a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Greg Peters but the Devils matched that run in their half of the inning.  The Jays then scored 3 runs in the ninth inning.  After a walk to Rich Dickson they had key hits by John Rozolis (double), Ron Mangini and Jim O'Brien (double).  The Devils responded with 2 runs in the ninth inning but fell 1 short.

The Blue Jays played a very Houdini-esque style of ball Tuesday.  Getting themselves into impossible situations and then escaping.  In the sixth inning the Devils had the bases loaded with 1 out.  Greg Peters made a catch in left center when a well hit ball appeared to be over his head.  He fired the ball home but it was cut off and the runner on second was doubled off.  After the Devils tied it up in the bottom of the eighth they still had the bases loaded with no one out.  The Jays escaped once again after an infield line drive out, an infield fly and a ground out killed the Devil's rally.  The Jays imitated Houdini again in the bottom of the ninth as the Devils had cut the lead to one run and had the bases loaded with two outs.  A ground out ended the game.  A fantastic effort by both teams.

John Rozolis led the Jays offense with 4 hits with a double and 2 runs scored.  Del Kates also had 4 hits with 3 runs scored.  Greg Peters (2 doubles, 2 runs), Tom Redding (2 RBI's), Ron Mangini (2 runs) and Jim O'Brien (double, 3 RBI's) all had 3 hits.  Monroe Weingarten chipped in with 2 hits and scored 2 runs.  Rich Dickson and Connie Kilgarriff both had key 2 out RBI singles.

Iron Pigs 12 Wildcats 11

The Iron Pigs defeated a very good Wildcats team by scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Iron Pigs started the inning down 11 to 4 and scored 8 to prevail 12 to 11.  They sent 13 batters to the plate getting 10 hits and an intentional walk to Jack McNulty. Howard Wible had 2 hits in the inning with his second hit driving in the winning run.  The Wildcats jumped out early scoring 4 in the first, 1 in the fourth and five in the fifth.  The Iron Pigs scored 2 in both the 3rd and 4th inning.  Jeff Blatt and Rich Dempsey led the Iron Pigs offense with 3 hits both with a double.  Dave Detwiler, Howard Wible, Mike Segal and John Walsh  all chipped in with 2 hits.  Jim Stabene contributed to the win with a hit and a walk.

A 7 run lead going into the bottom of the last inning turned into a nightmare for the Wildcats of Puss&Boots this morning. After a force out at home plate nothing else went right for the Wildcats. Tommy's team scored 8 runs to win the game and deliver the Wildcats into the losing bracket.  We played 6 good innings and then the shite hit the fan.  We were unable to get even 1 more out before the Iron Pigs made toast out of our defensive effort.  Their whole lineup came alive and we provided no additional defensive plays to stem the tide. Nothing went right after that and the Iron Pigs scored 7 more runs to deliver the cats to the losing bracket.

Editor's note:  If you are thinking that you missed the muslim guy striking a spectator please note that I made a small modification to what Bob provided.

Comets 7 Panthers 6

The Comets out lasted the Panthers 7 to 6 to advance in the postseason tournament. The Comets fell behind 4 to 1 early and fought back to take a 6 to 4 lead in the bottom of the 6th.  They then added one in the bottom of the 7th.  In the top of the 7th the Panthers scored 2 to close within 1 run at 7 to 6. With 2 runners on and 1 out a ground ball to short turned into a double play 3rd to 1st to end the game 7 to 6. The Comets were led by some great plays at 3rd by Frank Glauser who made 3 great plays to kill rallies. Offensively the Comets had 7 players that went 2 for 3 (Frank Glauser, Gene Corrado, Larry Restivo, Daryl Puzan, Steve Scheele, and Rich Waloff).  Larry Restivo had game high 3 RBI's, and Gary Jones had 2 RBIs.  Wayne Heaton pitched a complete game with no walks and 2 strikeouts.  A great team effort today!

Alas the Panthers season came to a halt at the hands of the Comets in a hard-fought game by a score of 7-6.  The Panthers took an early lead but the Comets came right back to make the game a 3-3 tie.  The Comets went ahead in the 5th inning  when they scored 3 runs to take and hold the lead.  The Panther defense was decent but could not quite hold back the Comets.  The Panthers put up 16 hits including 3 doubles.  The Panthers made the game exciting in the top of the 7th.  Down by 3, Kevin Culp hit a single, then Dave Ortlip hit a sweet double to move Kevin to 3rd base.  With runners on second and third, Rich Pich hit a monster 2 rbi double in the top of the 7th to pull the Panthers within 1 run but it was not to be. The scoring ended there.  Kevin Culp was 3-4, Dave Ortlip and Rich Pich both went 2-4 with a double each.  Jack Donohue was 1-4 with a double. Bob Silvester was 2-4 and Bim Bradford went 2-3 in the game.
