Tournament Day 3 results

Eagles 3 Comets 2

The Eagles and the Comets played another close low-scoring game with good pitching and good defense by both teams.

The Eagles scored two runs in the first inning and one more in the sixth inning.  They held the Comets scoreless over the last five innings and secured a 3-2 win.

Dave Cutler had the important “go ahead” hit to lead the Eagles to their victory.  Dave was a perfect two for two at the plate.  Ken Mealy also went two for two.  The Eagles managed twelve hits and clung to the pitching of Tom Delaney and the team’s defense.  The Comets played an excellent game and just fell short at the finish.

The Comets season ended on a, 3 to 2 defeat at the hands of the Eagles.  A close game that was 2 to 2 going into the bottom of the 6th when the Eagles pushed the game winner across for the one run win 3 to 2. A very good defense by the Eagles paved the way for the victory and another crucial blown call by the umpire did the Comets in. After playing ball and many tournaments for 69 years, I have never heard of the number 1 and 2  teams squaring off when 6 teams out of eight were left unless it was the final 2 teams left. The top 2 teams in the league in reality did not mean anything. The Comets lost to a better team today and had nothing to be asked for. It was a great ball game that we were in and it was very exciting. I would like to thank my whole team for their effort and fun year. Hope to see all my players again and would go to war with all of them. Hitting stars today were Jim Cro going 2 for 2 and Larry Restivo, Hal Katz, each getting 2 hits. Frank Glauser, Gary Jones, Steve Scheele, Gene Rubin, Steve Bradley and Frank Deon each with one hit. Good luck to the Eagles and hope you win a championship. Your team was a class act except for Tom Delaney's language again.

Editors Note:  The bracket used seeds the number 1 and number 2 teams. This is so that they would meet when there are only 2 teams remaining in the winners bracket.  The bracket doesn't get modified if the top seeds lose in preliminary games.

Wildcats 17 Blue Jays 10

Two 5 run innings set the pace for the Wildcats today as they defeated Jim's Bluejays by a 17 to 10 score. Perfect days at the plate by 3 Wildcats led the team today and better defense sealed the deal. The perfect players today were Ed Brandriff ,Tracy Zimmerman and Bill Matlack with Ed getting 4 hits, Tracy and Bill getting 3 each with much better fielding by the whole team. George Groves and Franklin Smith also had 3 hits to help win the game.  2 hits each from Frank Slack and Doug Rutter had timely hits to keep rallies going. After our poor showing on Tuesday it was real good to get back on our feet. The whole team responded well today and we hope to keep it going next week. The comedy routine between our pitcher and catcher will still be provided and probably continue for at least one more game. All this fun and entertainment at no extra charge.

The Wildcats scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to nip the Blue Jays 17 to 10.  A late drive by the Blue Jays ended on their own thirtyfour yard line as time expired.  The Jays played missing a couple of key components but the remaining players jumped out early scoring 7 runs in the first 2 innings.  The Jays couldn't maintain that pace as the Cats stepped on the gas and sped away.  The Jays offense was led by Jim O'Brien (3 for 3, double, triple, 3 runs) and Ron Mangini (3 for 4, 3 runs).  Tom Redding, Greg Peters, Lee Bullman and Rich Dickson chipped in with 2 hits each.  Del Kates was 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI's while filling in admirably at shortstop.  The Jays season is now officially over and it would be difficult to call it a success, but the moments of fustration were counterbalanced by the amount of pure euphoria experienced when we played well and prevailed.  Thank You Jays.
